Flipped Internships: Reimagining Student Work-based Learning Experiences

Partnerships with industry are essential elements of any high-quality CTE pathway, but work-based learning experiences are not always accessible—especially when COVID-19 protocols make it impossible for students to participate in off-site learning. In order to meet the needs of our students in 2021, some teachers are using a “flipped internship” model—a partnership between local businesses, schools and the CTE teacher--that brings industry experts into classrooms to guide students through project-based learning (PBL) units to solve real industry problems. It’s a new style of career exploration being utilized by innovative teachers that want to maintain career exploration opportunities and industry specific learning in spite of a global pandemic! You will hear about 2 different examples of successful flipped-model internships in the North County region: Canyon Crest Academy’s Tony Mauro will share how he uses flipped model internships with his Advanced Engineering students, who partner with DRS Daylight Solutions. BCKPrograms will share how they use the flipped model in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms to guide students through environmental science action projects that address pollution problems in their community.
